Premier, Pete Rock and 9th Wonder

Let it be known I am a total hip-hop nerd. And when the opportunity came to interview Pete Rock, Primo and 9th Wonder, I jumped for joy and if you would'nt have done the same your not my type of people. With that said enjoy the videos and please leave comments on the site. (FYI that is not me in the picture, but I was there). Peace.

THE RETURN OF RAMP JULY 7TH CENTRAL PARK SUMMERSTAGE

From Ubiquity Press Release:

UBIQUITY SET TO RELEASE PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS BY LEGENDARY 1970s ACT RAMP!

For a long time RAMP were one of modern soul music’s biggest mysteries. What did RAMP mean? How come their album is so damn hard to find? Why no second album What was the relationship with Roy Ayers? Heavily sampled (most notably on A Tribe Called Quest’s “Bonita Applebum” and much adored for their sublime version of "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" RAMP maintained a musical presence despite a lack of music and info.

Finally RAMP fans are enjoying a long overdue year of revival. The 1977 RAMP album "Come Into Knowledge" was recently re-issued in Japan, Wax Poetics magazine have an awesome 5-page piece on the band in their current issue. And by way of inclusion on the forthcoming Gilles Peterson Digs America II, and an upcoming single, Ubiquity Records will unleash two previously unreleased Ramp tracks this Fall.
Check the Ubiquity website for more updates soon. You can also check the re-united band live at their upcoming show:

Stronger

Feeling this track, peep the Akira reference at the end...

AUDIO: TOP QUALITY'S "MAGNUM OPUS"

Here's a You Tube Audio clip cause no one posted the actual music video. Only two people I know who own a copy of the video are myself and my Guyanese brother from another mother Big Skeet. We both were those kids who felt that the original Video Music Box with Ralph McDaniels on WNYW CH. 25(Network TV, Not Cable-i used to turn a dial on my TV to get this) was LAW and we taped our favorite videos on VHS tape. Maybe when we have a tech nerd willing to go through hours of tape, he or she will rip this video to the other 20 people who actually know this song. Many times I mention this record in blogs but I feel like this dude never got his due. So I have to keep the song alive. Another of the rare people who even knew this song existed my homie chip gave me the promo vinyl of this for Christmas two years ago...thats a friend.

WITNESS TO A MURDER...

PLEASE READ, PLEASE READ- EVERYONE IN THE HIP HOP COMMUNITY SHOULD READ THIS! CLICK ON IMAGE TO SEE TEXT IN LARGER FORMAT:

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE...AGAIN.

I'm not gonna be like everyone in the blog universe who's posting about the new Transformers movie and/or showing a trailer which you can find links to on every major website. Rather, I'm going by the tag line of both the Transformers and this blog by being "more than meets the eye." The Megatron Don is a blog conjured up by super producer and Jersey native (Yerp!) Just Blaze. He address various topics such as gear, No Homo stuff he encounters during his travels and obviously music related subjects. His embedded streaming audio will include rare gems you newbies have never heard and you OG's haven't heard in awhile. Obviously you can tell JB is a Transformers fam hence the homage on the blog's moniker, but on the most part it’s a good blog even if he was just and up and coming producer from Patterson. New Jerusalem heads will appreciate more obviously in references to the local legends i.e. Artifacts and he even posts pictures from Guerrilla Words extended fam El the Sensei, and his infamous 'Lo collection from a decade ago as seen here:

SAME DAMN 'LO SWEATER? FOR EL THAT WAS NEVER THE CASE...

Good looks to Maria and showing me this- yet another site to kill time checking out during work hours.

LUPE'S "CHICKEN RUN"

photo taken from HYPEBEAST

Lupe teams up with Japanese brand Swagger for this a line called Haru, meaning spring in Japanese(I thought it was a play on words with Hello-Haru, but that’s all in my head). The theme for this particular tee featured is their common love for fried chicken (lupe calls it the soul food staple, while in Japan this is supposedly also a mainstay appetizer). Although only Chi-town residents can cop the tee at St. Alfred's, its time to kiss ass to your homies from Chicago so they can pick one up for you. The other two figures featured in the caricature of Mr. Fiasco are Big-O & Iggy of Swagger. All im saying is this is borderline "Minstrel Show" if you know what I mean, in a post Don Imus media(did I really say that- oh god I'm losing it).

'LISTEN UP...LEND ME YOUR EAR, STOP AND STARE..."

I had to post this....

I won't front like a lot of other Hip-Hop aficionados claiming that I knew dudes name from jump but what I did know was the Roy Ayers' sample that you should already know...(pause if you really don't know this sample and you are over the age of 25-either you are a complete idiot or you are not a Hip-Hop fan. Lord there must be some standards..)I saw this video and it caught my heart with the quickness while I was making an eventual failed effort to grasp all the lyrics. Don't front that sample, although used ridiculously, was never used better than this. Closest would be the exception of Mary J. Blige's "My Life."

So I stumbled on this by the good graces of the Twelve Bar Blog and I thank Nick or whoever else wrote the blog(Scott? Love you brother but I doubt it). It was a refreshing reminder- I haven't heard this joint in about a year since Reason dropped the vinyl at Forbidden(previous entry)prior to my immediate circles full Serato conversion.

Anyway - I don't get giddy over tracks anymore but this was "refreshing," for the lack of a better adjective but it fits so well with my state of mind.

its 2:17am so apologies for the run-ons and "stream of conciousness" rant.

Highly Recommended like: insulin to a diabetic.

NEW VIDEO - PSYCHO LES, AL TARIQ & PROBLEMZ AKA BIG CITY "BOY"

Another video from the team at Nature Sounds, this time with some East Coast flavor via Big City. Directed by Rik Cordero, The Beatnuts legacy continues on another route but maintaining that Corona type swag.

NEW VIDEO - STRONG ARM STEADY FEATURING TALIB KWELI "ONE STEP"

The left coast trio of Krondon, Phil the Agony & Mitchy Slick collaborate with the BK emcee Talib Kweli on this new single from the good ol' boys at Nature Sounds. Good bounce to the ounce and as always I click another notch on my counter for the "filipino girl cameo." good looks to dj reason as always for the heads up.

SUPREME MILES DAVIS TEES

Supposedly this is one out of the 6 designs skateboard apparel company Supreme is dropping at all their retail locations. If you ever did any research on Miles Davis, you should already know that the correlation between this psychedelic tee and the jazz trumpeter's insane drug addiction fit hand in glove. Keep a lookout for the other designs...

Respect the Architect Miles...
FYI - he helped created 3 subgenres of jazz - Cool, Modal and Fusion.
It's like saying someone like Nas creating:
Rakim's innovative"new school" flow,
Twista/Bone/Chip Fu's Fast Flow
Slick Rick's Storytelling Flow

** yes you can argue who belongs to what- the excercise here is to show how Miles innovated and remained relavant during his entire career.

KBANGER LISTENING PARTY AT MP3.COM!

K.BANGER IS MOST DEFINITELY GUERRILLA WORDS EXTENDED FAM, REPPING JERSEY STRONG... TAKE A READ AND LISTEN TO THE NEW ALBUM!

INFO VIA FRESH PRESS MEDIA:
K Banger, the newly signed artist signed to Shaman Work Recordings is set to digitally release his upcoming freshman album Truth Be Told of which MP3.com is hosting a listening party all this week. One month out from the date which the album hits webpages of digital distributors everywhere, the entire album can be previewed at the following link:

Catching the tip of the digital release tidal wave with the official downloadable drop date set for July 10th, the Central New Jersey MC/producer is coming out the box exploring new ways to connect with his growing audience but still staying true to his music.
Although Truth Be Told is his first official release as a solo artist, K Banger is far from being an industry scene newbie having played the Vans Warped Tour two years in a row ('04 and '05) and opening for acts like X Clan, Non Phixion, and Savion Glover. Banger has also been featured on numerous releases such as Shaman Work Presents Family Files Volumes 1 & 2, Scienz of Life’s Book of the Dead along with Diggin In The Archives and Floyd the Locsmif’s Divine Designz among others. In addition, he is an audio producer for Black Entertainment Television where Banger’s music and voice is heard literally by millions daily.

Linking up with now Shaman Work label president, Lil’ Sci (of Scienz of Life), in the New Jersey scene nearly ten years ago was how Banger became a presence in the fold of Shaman’s endeavors in the years to come. It was a matter of waiting to strike once the iron was hot to make this release a reality as an officially signed Shaman artist.

Impending Bloodbath

A couple of weeks ago, Encite pointed out that All Things Must Change. True.. I just didn't realize they change this quickly. Ever since, the Mets and Yankees have literally swapped places.. again. And it looks to stay that way for at least a little while longer.

Here are the matchups for the second installment of the Subway Series 07:

Friday 6/15: Oliver Perez vs Roger Clemens
Sat 6/16: Tom Glavine vs Tyler Clippard
Sun 6/17: Orlando Hernandez vs Chien Ming Wang

With the way the Mets have (not) been swinging their bats, their only realistic chance of a win in this series is against Clippard. But then again, the Mets have a tendency of making marginal rookie starters like him look like Christy Mathewson, and Glavine seems to be stuck on 295 wins forever, so even that game is looking bleak. I fully expect a carnage this weekend the likes of the 07 NBA Finals.

Brace yourself and cover the kids' eyes because it's going to get real ugly in the Bronx this weekend.

Why the Mets won't win sh*t this year..

  1. Guillermo Mota sucks without steroids.

  2. Joe Smith is not the truth, contrary to what we all believed a month ago.

  3. Scott Schoeneweis is complete basura, and now we're stuck with him through 2009.

  4. Encite's favorite pitcher Aaron Heilman cherishes giving up longballs in big spots, probably because he's still pouting about not being a starter.

  5. Jorge Sosa(?!) has all of a sudden become the Mets best starter - not a good sign.

  6. David Wright is more concerned with TV commercials than with his game.

  7. Jose Reyes has seemingly lost all his power, after all those meaningless HR's in spring training.

  8. That stupid freakin' catch in the NLCS will be Endy Chavez's only career highlight.

  9. Carlos Delgado is looking older than ever.

  10. A search party needs to be dispatched for Moises Alou.

  11. Tom "I'm still a Brave at heart" Glavine is more concerned with 300 wins than he is with the team.

  12. Carlos "the walking $119M chokejob" Beltran is allergic to curveballs and to driving in a run from 3rd with less than 2 outs.

  13. Most importantly, Encite decided to jinx us a couple weeks ago. Ever since, the Mets and Yankees have seemingly switched positions. Lol sorry brother, I just had to point that out.

REHAB FROM REHAB

Is it just me, or is this damn song so catchy- so much so the melody repeats in my skull over and over again:

They tried to make me go to rehab

We Tang Clan?!?

Yes I do watch Fox News and not because I am down with the far right but because you have to know what the enemy is thinking. By now we all know hip-hop is the cause of the world's ills but trying to bring in the Wu in this debate, is straight foolishness. Wu-Tang is for the babies!

And Another One...

As easy as it is to hate on dem boys, you know A) they got alot of hits B) they laid the foundation for southern hip-hop and C) they made history winning an Oscar for Hustle and Flow. I aint gonna lie after I finished this interview I thought it sucked, but after laying it down on paper, it seems like another hit. Ch-ch-ch-check it out on Prefix.

BIG BOI (OUTKAST) IN NEW CROOKS & CASTLES CAMPAIGN

Yeah the blog's getting a little gear oriented now, just cause streetwear is unavoidably connected to Hip-Hop,like it or not. Here's the new Crooks & Castles Summer 2007 campaign featuring a bunch of streetwear moguls, taking the turn as models. In addition, artists such as Big Boi are now repping the gear which will both add credibility as well as add the dreaded "mainstream" label having these hipster, sneakerfags(yeah I said it) jump on the bandwagon. To check out the interview and other pics go to HighSnobiety.

DID I DO THAT????

I just had to post this - I'll admit I did rock a pair of these urkel-esqe spectacles way back in my elementary school days resulting in brothers and cousins to dub me the title of Filipino Urkel. Evidently, the 3Sixteen clothing company has ressurected these ill fated memories on a tee shirt now for sale on Digital Gravel. By the way- I did have a thing for cheese back then which also prompted countless badgering by the forementioned family.

The irony is my useless fact in conversation last week(I ususally blurt out random facts) was that Steve's cousin, Myrtle Urkel hailed from Biloxi, Mississippi. I am reminded every time I make that left onto Myrtle Avenue when going down to Brooklyn from the Manhattan Bridge.
