TAKEN FROM MXGM.COM: The Black August Hip Hop Project strives to promote human rights though supporting and influencing the global development of Hip Hop culture. By facilitating exchanges between international communities where Hip Hop is a vital part of youth culture, we promote awareness about the social and political issues that affect our global communities.
Our vision is to bring culture and politics together and to allow them to naturally evolve into a unique Hip Hop consciousness that informs our collective struggle for a more just, equitable and human world.
2007 is the tenth year that the Black August Hip Hop Project has been putting on benefit concerts to assist and support our Political Prisoners. The venue for 2007 is an indication of just how large the event has become: The Nokia Theater, which is located at 1515 Braodway, at 44th Street and Times Square, in New York City!

FROM MILES-DAVIS.COM: Part tribute and part rejuvenation project, Evolution Of The Groove brings Miles Davis, the jazz trumpeter and composer responsible for Bitches Brew, Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue and many other classics, back to the fore. A precursor to the 6-CD box set Miles Davis: The Complete On The Corner Sessions, the Evolution Of The Groove remix EP premieres tracks with rapper Nas on vocals and his father Olu Dara on trumpet, Carlos Santana's guitar mastery, and an A-list contemporary music ensemble consisting of Miles's nephew Vince Wilburn, Jr. on drums and programming, and bassist Charley Drayton (Rolling Stones, Iggy Pop, Divinyls) with co-production by jazz funk legend Lenny White (Return To Forever).
This five-song EP draws from five different Miles Davis albums, providing a unique context for his landmark recordings of the '50s, '60s and '70s in today's contemporary marketplace. The EP takes off with "Freddie Freeloader," a previously unreleased snippet of riffing and studio chatter between Miles and his producer Irving Townshend in 1959. Nas appears on 1966's "Freedom Jazz Dance (Evolution Of The Groove)," and his verses manage to perfectly complement Davis's horn. The centerpiece of the set "It's About That Time" shines with Carlos Santana on guitar - a satisfying blend of Miles's music and modern beats. "Honky Tonk" serves up raw funk, setting up the closing piece "Black Satin" from the funk orchestra sessions for On The Corner. Evolution Of The Groove is an elegant tribute to the legacy of Miles and just one more achievement demonstrating why Miles is a jazz master and still the man for every generation.

Before I start, I always have in the back of my head what witty, snappy comments other blogs say about a new music video-then I try my best not to sound like them bitches...
anyway, thanks to Illmeezy for telling me this video dropped...Initially hearing that Kweli bit off the HP commercials seemed kinda gay. After seeing the actual video I have to make a retraction and admit it was well put together. I'm glad the name in the middle of 'equality' is branching off and just making music not expected of him. Keep up the good work and give me my damn Blackstar album already. Yes I heard the interviews but nevertheless-give me another one!

If you never seen this video before-I won't blame you. It never got any rotation in the first place. "Cobra Clutch" is the track off of Wu-Tang's The Swarm LP and shined as the most memorable track on the album. Shit is hard!

If someone from around my way today told me that they loved this track, I would tell them they're full of shit. Thing is, growing up around a heavy amount of Hip-Hop listeners during my school days, the majority of tracks they would be bumping would be either West Coast G-Funk or East Coast hardcore. A song like "Fudge Pudge" was not in anyone's rotation in my age range. This came out when I was in the fifth grade so making substantial critical analysis on my peers' music choice may not be the best idea in the world. But when Hip-hop was in its so-called "critical peak," I personally felt that if you were ignorant to the fact-you did not exist. So the track consisting of Prince Po, a heavier Pharaoh Monch & an up and comer by the name of Omar Credle would blend hard, authoritative rhymes with a more serene, blunt exhaling jazz loop. For those who recognize- ENJOY! For those listening for the first time-understand why we hate the state of music generally speaking.

TAKEN FROM GIANT STEP A cornerstone of Hip-Hop's late 90's indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas (having released an impressive slew of 12" singles on his then self-run label Beyond Real during this time) as well as providing the canvas for an array of that era’s lyrical giants. As an emcee in New York City, if you didn’t have a Spinna production under your belt, well, you just hadn’t accomplished all there was to accomplish. Everyone from Mos Def, Talib Kweli to Pharaohe Monch boasted Spinna beats to prove their worth to the scene. At the height of indie-kingpin Rawkus Records heyday, Spinna was in demand, also churning out timeless classics of the era from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Complex and The Polyrhythm Addicts (his all-too-brief collabo-group with Apani B., Shaabam Sadeeq and Complex), who recently released their excelent Break Glass... LP earlier this year.
Vincent "DJ Spinna" Williams obsessively collects for his extensive vinyl library and pursues the full range of his roots (Funk, Soul and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) with no restraints.
Join us for the eighth Monday evening boogie in our Private Park series with 4 hours of grooves provided by DJ Spinna.

Honestly, I lived off of Yo! MTV Raps. Being confined to my suburban house and nowhere to go, Yo! replaced my Saturday morning cartoons and took over my thoughts at family parties as I wanted to rush home to catch the late night Friday editions. So as sneakers companies have been doing their usual "tribute" kicks, Puma commissoned a line of Yo! sneakers for those who reminsce -My God!

I got put on to Little Brother by my Organic Thoughts fam(specifically Fraze & El Gambina in '02/'03) Obvious alliances through the Justice League and our very own Illmind continue are nepotistic ways but one cannot deny that Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh are no joke. LB is one of those rare talents that can work with people Bun B, Lil Wayne, & Dj Drama as well as work on the other side of the fence with artists such as Kanye West, Talib Kweli & Mos Def. Mark your calendars for The Get Back- Illmeezy's produced single, "Good Clothes" is circulating as we speak on myspace.
From Press Release b/w Okayplayer:
Oakland, CA, August 9, 2007 – Nearly two years since the release of their critically acclaimed sophomore album The Minstrel Show, North Carolina’s Little Brother returns with Getback, a slim and trim 11 track album slated for release this fall on ABB Records.
The new album features production from Illmind, Hi-Tek, Nottz, Denaun Porter and 9th Wonder, as well as guest shots from Lil’ Wayne (the playful “Breakin My Heart”) and fellow Hall of Justus family members Jozeemo and Darien Brockington, (the bittersweet thump of ‘That Ain’t Love’ and the vibrant ‘Two Step Blues’ respectively).... for more go to Okayplayer.

TAKEN FROM CITY PARKS FOUNDATION:Charter members of the “Native Tongues” family, Black Sheep debuted with one of the best hip-hop albums of the early ‘90s: A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing. Full of witty rhymes, imaginative beats and hilarious, self-mocking skits, the album featured singles like “Flavor Of The Month” and “The Choice Is Yours,” both of which went to the top of the rap charts. Black Sheep’s triumphant new album, 8WM/Novakane, came out at the end of 2006.

Check the new Hezekiah video, "Looking Up" featuring the incomprable Bilal Oliver. Hez is on Soulspazm/Rawkus label and is one of the main representatives of the widely known producer showcases, Beat Society. We had Hezekiah come to the now defunct Guerrilla::Words radio about a year ago & I can vouch this dude is very strong willed.
